Whisper Quiet generator with bio-ethanol fuel cell

Dutch companies have developed a mobile generator that produces electricity using a fuel cell, fed with bio-ethanol. The client Rijkswaterstaat wants to use these kind of low-noise fuel cell generators at construction zones at night.

The unit contains a miniature steam reformer, developed by HyGear Fuel Cell Systems from Arnhem, which liberates hydrogen from bio-ethanol. Electricity is generated from that hydrogen by a fuel cell 'stack' from neighbour company NedStack. The power electronics comes from EXENDIS in Ede, the Netherlands, gas technology from Air Products Nederland in Amsterdam and Bredenoord Aggregaten in Apeldoorn has created a marketable product.

The project is designed under the Small Business Innovation Research program(SBIR) of Senter Novem, with additional funding from Rijkswaterstaat that opened a contest on clean and quiet applications for applications for land, civil or water engineering.

Earlier this year the aggregate already tested during the Lowlands-festival. The official public presentation takes place next Wednesday during the Innovatie-estafette at Air Station Valkenburg near Leiden.
